LAS VEGAS (AP) - The winner at the World Series of Poker main event this year will get $8.71 million, slightly less than last year but more than many players and industry followers expected given recent legal problems for online cardrooms. Series officials said Sunday night that 6,865 players entered the no-limit Texas Hold `em tournament, generating a $64.5 million prize pool. Each entry costs $10,000. Read more
Bodog UK granted online licence
Bodog has received a UK remote sports betting licence from the Gambling Commission 24 hours after the government announced plans to revamp the country’s licensing and tax regimes and will open a dot.co.uk site in three months. The operator has three other licences in Antigua (Bodog Europe), the Philippines (Bodog88) to cater for Asian customers and Kahnawake (dot.eu), its former dot.com operation whose domain was changed following the Black Friday indictments in April. AGA to Introduce Poker Bill in Fall
In late June, Congressman Joe Barton (R – Texas) introduced a new bill in the United States House of Representatives aimed at legalizing and regulating online poker. The bill, the Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer Protection, and Strengthening UIGEA Act of 2011, was well received by the poker community and co-sponsored by, amongst others, Rep. Barney Frank (D – Mass.) and Rep. John Campbell (R – Calif.), who had previously introduced their own bill. Last week, eGaming Review reported that not all parties associated with gaming are thrilled with the bill, though. The American Gaming Association (AGA), an organization which represents the commercial gaming industry, will not extend its support to Barton’s bill.
